Open Call for a Tenure-track Assistant Professor or Lecturer (Histology)

   The Faculty of Life Sciences at Kumamoto University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position (Associate Professors or Lecturer) in the Department of Histology, in the Great Department of Basic and Clinical Medicine, Division of Integrated Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

    Morphology reveals the relationships between structures and functions by observation, which requires experience and skill in microscopy. The Department of Histology is engaged in morphological research on the nervous systems and reproductive systems using microscopes. We are calling for applicants for a researcher job, associate professor, or lecturer in this field. Applicants must be able to conduct research with various microscopes, and especially must have vast knowledge and great expertise in electron microcopy. The microscopes and sample preparation devices are installed in the Faculty of Life Sciences at Kumamoto University.

    This department is in charge of giving lectures and practical training classes in histology in the School of Medicine at Kumamoto University. Therefore, applicants also must have at least 10 years' experience in giving lectures and practical training classes in histology. Since the education at Kumamoto University is provided in Japanese, applicants are also required to have sufficient Japanese proficiency to give lectures and practical training classes in that language. The successful applicant may be also assigned to teach undergraduate liberal arts courses, and to provide graduate education in her or his specialized field in the Graduate School of Medical Sciences at Kumamoto University.

4. Requirements

  1. PhD
  2. Having an outstanding ability to provide graduate and undergraduate education, suitable for an instructor concurrently appointed by the Graduate School of Medical Sciences and the School of Medicine, Kumamoto University
  3. Having an excellent character, suitable for a member of the Faculty of Life Sciences, Kumamoto University
  4. Experience in giving lectures and practical training classes in histology for more than 10 years
  5. Medical or dental license

5. Starting Date of Employment

The earliest possible date after June 1, 2019

6. Research Expenses, Research Environment, etc.

  1. The successful applicant will have up to 5 million yen of her or his research expenses covered over two years.
  2. If the researcher employed as a tenure-track associate professor or lecturer is a woman, she will be awarded up to 2 million yen of an additional grant over two years with support from the buffering system for female researchers.

 

7. Working Conditions

Work system:  

Professional-type discretionary work system

While actual working hours can be decided at the worker's discretion, daily working hours are deemed as 7 hours 45 minutes.

Term of service:  

Fixed (five-year tenure track)

    • Interim assessment will be conducted in the third year of service, and tenure assessment will be conducted around four and half a years after appointment. If the tenure assessment shows that the worker is eligible, she or he will be appointed as a regular member of the Faculty of Life Sciences, Kumamoto University, without a fixed term.
    • The tenure-track term may be extended by up to three years according to the assessment of research results and the future prospects. In such cases, reassessment will be conducted seven years and six months after the initial appointment.

    • In the case where the worker takes long-term leave for childbirth, childcare, family care, etc., or in the case where a disaster or other emergency prevents the worker from conducting long-term research, the tenure-track term may be extended within the scope equivalent to the relevant leave period, etc.

10. Review Procedure
